It’s as beautiful as it is functional. It cools, it soothes, it sparkles. No self-respecting hostess would ever be caught without it. For this weeks’ new-use highlight, I’m turning the spotlight on ice, ice, baby! Whether you buy it in bulk or make it yourself (perhaps in a fun shape, like one of these?), it’s an undeniable must-have and it’s got more uses than you might think. Check out a few of them below.

Plastis ice cube trays, $2 each, IKEA.

1. Dent eraser: Sometimes, all a drab space requires is a little furniture rearranging, and voila: A whole new look. But the transformation falters if your rug or carpet shows the markings of the old layout where the heavy furnishings had stood. Just pop a cube of ice over a dent and let it melt before fluffing up the fibres to spring them back to life.

2. Ouchie ouster: If you have little ones, keep an ice tray of aloe vera in the freezer. It’s a great soother for bumps and bruises. If the ailment is a splinter, use frozen water to numb the area before picking the assailer out with a needle.

3. Dressing darling: Make a super-creamy salad dressing at home. Simply place all your ingredients in a lidded jar and add an ice cube. Shut the jar and shake it vigorously. Remove the ice before serving. Your guests will be begging for your recipe!
